Dear White Hill Families,
Louie Vaccaro is 16-yaer-old a local kid who was badly injured in a car accident on Christmas Eve 2013. A fundraiser is being held on Sunday, May 4th to support Louie's lengthy recovery. For more information see the event flyer which includes contacts and information on how to donate if you can't attend the May 4th event.
For several years, Marin County has held one of the top spots in the California for alcohol and substance use and abuse – for all age groups. Our children use and abuse substances more than kids in any other county in our state. Data also shows that adults in Marin use alcohol at higher rates than nearly every other county in our state.
This pervasiveness of drug and alcohol use has the highest potential for long-term or fatal consequences for our children. New research shows that the earlier the experimentation, the greater chance for alcohol or drug dependence later in life and brain scan technology shows that chemicals have apermanent effect on the developing brain.
The good news? School-aged children can benefit from prevention and intervention strategies based upon education, dialogue, and the support and healthy modeling by parents, at schools, and in the community at large. Our community is taking action through a group of citizens representing city government, education, administration, law enforcement, business, youth services, faith-based organizations, students, and parents who formed a coalition.
We invite and encourage every family to attend one of two upcoming community meetings to learn more about how this problem is affecting our children and what you can do to help. A panel of Drake students and local experts will be available to answer questions. For more information see the event flyer or visit www.facebook.com/rossvalleycoalition.
Our talented musicians will be performing on several occasions during the last weeks of the school year. Stop by one of these events: You'll be lad you did! Student Music Performance Schedule for May/June 2014
