About Our Library

Our library has over 12,000 books and offers students of every reading level many choices for pleasure and research reading. All classes have a scheduled library time each week, starting off with a read-aloud session. Kindergarteners and 1st-graders learn library etiquette with Shelf Elf and choose a book to check out. Older grades learn library skills, as well as having computer time with their teacher in the computer lab. Students may also visit the library at all recesses. Students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades may use the computer lab during morning and lunch recess. Parents can check out books, too. Just stop in and set up an account.

Every year, the YES Foundation funds new materials for the library, which keeps the collection fresh and the kids excited about books.

The library also sponsors various programs and reading incentives, including voting for the California Young Reader Medal; a Mock Caldecott Medal in January; Author Day; Birthday Books Harry Potter Jeopardy; What Are You Reading Blog and this year’s Reading Dragon.

asiembiedaLibraryAnne has been working as library specialist at Manor since 2003. She has the BEST job at the school. Getting kids excited about reading is great fun. Before working at Manor, Anne was a parent at Manor for six years, so the school is really a second home. Anne has had various other careers before this one, including film production, flight attendant, teaching and the Peace Corps in Cameroun, Africa. She received her degree at the University of Illinois in French and Secondary Education.

EL Logo

Welcome to Manor Elementary School – Marin’s first Expeditionary Learning School! We are proud to partner with EL Education, formerly known as Expeditionary Learning. EL Education is an innovative, award-winning teaching approach born 25 years ago out of a collaboration between Harvard’s Graduate School of Education and Outward Bound. Today, there are over 150 EL schools across the US, including 10 schools in California.

Built on a foundation of academic rigor, character development, and joyful and inspiring twenty-first century learning, EL helps schools make those standards come alive for students by creating stimulating, hands-on, project-based learning environments both in and outside the classroom. Designed with an emphasis on teamwork and shared values of respect, responsibility, courage and kindness, the goal of EL is to invigorate learning through a variety of innovative core practices including learning expeditions. Learning Expeditions are long-term, in-depth, research studies focused on a compelling topic that typically seek to solve a real world problem in the school or community. Expeditions culminate in a high-quality product, presentation, or performance that both synthesizes student learning and serves a purpose for others. Examples of models of excellence from other EL schools can be found at EL’s Center for High Quality Work.

Manor is in its first official year of a four-year process toward becoming an EL Credentialed School. In order to become credentialed, a school must show high levels of implementation of the EL Education model in the following areas:

  • Student Mastery of Knowledge and Skills
  • High Quality Student Work
  • Student Character
  • Implementation of Expeditionary Learning Core Practices

Although we are just beginning this official journey with EL Education, Manor teachers and staff have already begun implementing some of the core practices and approaches from EL. Much of our work is about aligning and refining what we’ve already been doing over the last few years and looking critically at our work through the lens of the EL framework. We are so excited for the 17-18 school year ahead and look forward to working with you and your family to make your child’s education at Manor extraordinary!

For more information about EL education please see our EL FAQ’s and the official EL website at www.eleducation.org.
